Tend Money is a household budget alert service. When a transaction hits your connected bank account, we send a text to both phone numbers on your account. That’s the whole product.
This policy explains what data we collect, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and what rights you have. We’ve written it to be readable by a human, not just a lawyer.
What we collect
When you sign up and use Tend Money, we collect:
- Your name and email address — used to create your account and reach you if there’s a billing issue.
- Two phone numbers — yours and your partner’s. We use these to send SMS alerts.
- Budget categories and limits — the spending categories you set up (e.g., Dining $60/month).
- Bank connection token — an encrypted access token issued by Plaid that allows us to pull transaction data on your behalf. We store this token; we do not store your bank login credentials.
- Transaction data (temporary) — when a transaction comes in, we read it to generate your alert text, then discard it. We do not build a transaction history or store your spending records permanently.
- Stripe billing data — your subscription status and payment method details. Stripe handles all payment processing; we store only the Stripe customer ID and subscription status.
How we use it
We use your data for exactly one purpose: delivering the service you signed up for.
- We read incoming transactions to check them against your budget limits.
- We format an alert message and send it to both phone numbers via Twilio.
- We use your email to send receipts, subscription confirmations, and service notices.
- We use your Stripe subscription status to gate access to the service.
We do not sell your data. We do not use your spending behavior for advertising. We do not build profiles on you.
Plaid — bank connection
We use Plaid to connect to your bank account. Plaid is a regulated financial data company that handles authentication directly — your bank username and password are never sent to or stored by Tend Money.
When you connect your bank through the Plaid flow, you’re also agreeing to Plaid’s End User Privacy Policy. Plaid may retain data according to their own policies, independent of ours.
We store the access token Plaid gives us — encrypted in our database — so we can pull transaction data on an ongoing basis. We do not store the raw transaction records after an alert is sent.
Twilio — SMS delivery
We use Twilio to send SMS alerts to your phone numbers. When we send a message, Twilio processes the phone number and message content. Twilio has its own Privacy Policy governing how they handle that data.
Standard messaging rates from your carrier may apply. We are not responsible for carrier fees.
Stripe — payments
Billing is handled by Stripe. Your payment card information is entered directly into Stripe’s secure form and never touches our servers. We store your Stripe customer ID and subscription status so we can verify you have an active plan. Stripe’s Privacy Policy governs how they handle your payment data.
Data retention
- Account data (name, email, phone numbers, budget limits) — kept as long as your account is active.
- Bank access token — kept as long as your account is active and bank connection is live. Deleted when you disconnect your bank or close your account.
- Transaction data — not retained. We read it, generate the alert, and move on.
- Billing records — kept for 7 years to satisfy standard accounting and tax requirements.
Your rights
You can do any of the following at any time:
- Delete your account — go to your account dashboard and choose Delete Account. This disconnects your bank via Plaid (revoking our access token), cancels your subscription, and removes your data from our database.
- Update your phone numbers or budget limits — from your account dashboard, anytime.
- Disconnect your bank — without closing your account. Alerts will pause until you reconnect.
- Cancel your subscription — from your account dashboard. Service continues until the end of your current billing period.
- Request a copy of your data — email us and we’ll send you what we have within 30 days.
Security
Bank access tokens are encrypted at rest. We use HTTPS everywhere. Our database is hosted on Turso with access restricted to our application. We don’t have perfect security — no one does — but we take it seriously.
If you believe there’s a security issue, please email us immediately at matt@tendmoney.app.
Children
Tend Money is designed for married couples managing household finances. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has signed up, contact us and we’ll delete the account.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we’ll send an email to your account address at least 14 days before the changes take effect. Continued use of the service after that date means you accept the updated policy.
